CyberNews changes

This edition of CyberNews will consist of a link rather than the entire issue. We are doing this for a couple reasons:

  1. It reduces the size of mail, which speeds up delivery.
  2. Since the message is small, it reduces the likelihood that an email application will consider it to be spam.
  3. Errors or corrections to articles will be reflected whenever anyone references the issue.
  4. It reduces the size of your personal mail files.

Please let us know if you experience any problems with this once we start. Send email to dpvc147@scouting.org.

FRIENDS OF SCOUTING 2010!

2009 sure was an interesting year! We are now looking ahead and continuing the journey into our 100th year with a bright outlook. Please note that our 2010 Friends of Scouting campaign focuses on doing our best and recognizing the effort it takes to have a successful campaign that maintains a strong council.

The first step is to have all of the units in our DPVC family recruit a Friends of Scouting Chairman that will attend the kickoff on Thursday, January 14th. Here, they will learn the duties of a unit FOS chairman, and enjoy a free meal with other in the same role. They will also learn about how the families in your unit can earn invitations to attend a council wide FREE and FUN event at the end of the campaign. Please not that it is imperative to send someone from your unit to attend the FOS kickoff. Registration forms will be going out soon!

A Century of Accomplishment in Scouting - Capsule Highlights

As part of the Des Plaines Valley Council’s celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in this Nation, we will periodically publish these Capsule Highlights of important and interesting milestones. Watch for these in CyberNews and on our Website through the end of our Anniversary Year in 2010. To the extent possible, these historical items will appear during the time of year in which they occurred, if not on the specific dates.

Follow the enclosed links for more information.

December 8, 1941
Following the signing of the declaration of war with Japan by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the government requests Boy Scout service for the distribution of defense bonds and stamp posters; collection of aluminum and wastepaper; defense housing surveys; victory gardens; distribution of air-raid posters; cooperation with the American Red Cross; and, by joint agreement with the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, services in three capacities--messengers, assisting emergency medical units, and firewatchers. By the end of 1942, 28 projects are requested by the government, including the collection of 30 million pounds of rubber in a two-week drive; all-out salvage based on the government-issued pamphlet Scrap and How Scouts Collect It; distribution of pledge cards for war bonds and savings stamps; victory gardens; work on farms and in harvest camps; and government dispatch bearers.

Scouts’ service continues through the war. By the end of 1945, the total Boy Scout war service includes 69 requests from the government. Twenty thousand Scouts earn the General Douglas MacArthur Medal for growing food.

A Job Well Done A Job Well Done

A Fall Camporee to Remember!

Held out at Illinois Beach State Park was indeed a Camp to remember. Partnering with the John G. Shedd and the Illinois State Biologist, the Camporee centered around conservation, preservation, and detailed lessons of both native and invasive species in Illinois. In the outdoor classroom, Scouts took what they learned in the morning sessions and applied it when they helped remove the invasive species while constructing two controlled fires.

Many, many thanks goes to Event Chair: Richard Anderson for a superb and well-organized event and to all those who staffed and made the experience above and beyond the expectations of our units in attendance. Uniquely designed patches by Leo Dombrowski along with Shedd pins were passed out at the end of camp.
