Training Events 2010 — 2011

Providing Positive Youth Experience Through Trained Leaders

Every youth deserves a trained leader! Trained leaders make better Packs, Troops, and Crews. When leaders are trained, they feel more confident to run Scouting units, youth have more fun in the program and stay in Scouting longer. Leader training is offered in the Des Plaines Valley Council on an on-going basis. You may attend training in any district.

The Des Plaines Valley Council Excellence in Training Award has been established to recognize those units who have set a high standard in leadership training. Studies prove that youth stay in the program longer when they have trained leaders who know how to make the program fun and exciting.

An expanded program of Basic Leader Training continues in our Council year round! Feel free to contact your District or Council Training chair if you have questions about the new program. Please refer to the training event flyers available at Roundtables or the Council Service Center, or call the Des Plaines Valley Council at 708-354-1111. Contact your District for more information on training events.

Sequence of Training

The sequence for Basic Leader Training is shown in the following diagram. After completing Youth Protection Training and Fast Start for their program, all leaders take the same training course (This is Scouting) followed by courses that are specific to their Scouting program – Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, Venturing Leader, or Exploring Adult Leader Specific Training. After successfully completing the basic courses, all leaders are eligible to take the more advanced Wood Badge for the 21st Century course. The 2010-2011 Training Calendar lists the Basic Leader courses in chronological order.

Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training is the required first step for any new volunteer in any Scouting position and must be completed at the time of registration and before he or she meets with any youth member.

Registration and annual renewal for any BSA adult position requires completion of Youth Protection Training (YPT) every two (2) years. Those individuals not meeting these YPT criteria will not have their annual registration renewed.

Youth Protection Training for Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, and Venturing Leaders is available online at http://www.myscouting.org/ . Completion is noted automatically in the BSA training records database if the module is experienced online. However, for those with limited Internet access or preferring the interaction of a live class, the council provides such YPT classes.

Fast Start Training

Fast start is the next step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.

Fast Start is available to all persons interested in the Scouting program and is required for any direct contact leader to achieve fully trained status. This training is not designed to replace Basic Leader Training, but rather to provide you with a quick introduction and overview of the program. Copies of the video are available for purchase at the Scout Shop and for checkout from the Council Service Center.

Fast Start is also available online at http://www.myscouting.org/ . Completion is noted automatically in the BSA training records database if the module is experienced online.

This is Scouting

This Is Scouting replaces New Leader Essentials and is available online at http://www.myscouting.org/ . Completion of This Is Scouting is required for any direct contact leader to achieve fully trained status. It provides an overview of the Scouting organization, including history, values, programs, youth protection, community involvement, and training. The module consists of six video sections, each followed by a brief quiz. Completion is noted automatically in the BSA training records database if the module is experienced online. Estimated time to complete: 50 minutes.

The Trainer's EDGE

The Trainer’s EDGE replaces the Trainer Development Conference (BSA 500) as the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge for the 21st Century and NYLT staffs.

The purpose of The Trainer’s EDGE course is to provide and help develop the platform skills of a trainer. It is meant to focus on the participant, while raising the level of skill a trainer brings to the staff experience. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course is intended to “train the trainer” on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experience in methods and media.
