Eagle Scout

After completing the Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life Ranks, a Scout is ready to begin work on his Eagle Scout Badge. That includes earning the required amount of merit badges, completing a service project, and completing a Board of Review. The Des Plaines Valley Council Advancement Committee has summarized much of this information in the Trailing the Eagle document.

The Mentor works with the Scout in preparation of his Project Plan, approves the plan, and supports the Scout as the project itself proceeds and the report is completed. The Scout uses the outline on the Eagle Project Concept Approval and Eagle Mentor Request document to request an Eagle Mentor. This information may be recorded in an email and sent to the Council.

As implementation of the Eagle Mentor program has proceeded, it has become apparent that the role of the troop in supporting Eagle candidates is often not well understood. We have seen situations ranging from strong, expert adult support to no support whatsoever. To address this problem, the Council Advancement Committee recently approved the Eagle Mentor Program Introduction document and Eagle Scout Candidate Worksheet. It is our hopes that this will help to facilitate the process and provide strong, consistent support for the Scouts who are working towards Scouting’s highest rank.
