Des Plaines Valley Council Strategic Plan
2010: Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow
As Scouting enters its second century, the Strategic Plan provides a focus for the growth and success of
our Council in the years to come.
Now is the ideal time for the Des Plaines Valley Council to examine where we are
today, where we would like to be tomorrow, and how we can get from today to
tomorrow.
It is a roadmap identifying the important issues that the Des Plaines Valley
Council must address in the next five years.
The Strategic Planning Committee was composed of 60 volunteers from throughout the Council. They were unit, district, and council leaders. Their names are listed in the Summary report. For a year, these people met to study data, to discuss issues, and to develop recommendations. In particular, they worked:
- to identify the challenges & opportunities that arise from social, economic, and demographic changes in the communities we serve.
- to determine how we continue to provide a high-quality program for the greatest number of youth.
- to consider how to make the best possible use of resources, including volunteers, professionals, finances, and physical resources.
The Executive Board and the Strategic Planning Committee invited comments from all Scouters in the Council and seriously considered all of them.
However, the Strategic Plan is a living document. While we have a Board-approved document, we also have a Board-approved mandate to annually revisit and validate the plan and its recommendations.
A planning framework involving five key factors, called Pillars for Council Success, was used in developing the Strategic Plan. Click on the Pillar names to read the associated reports.
Pillar 1: Quality Program Experience – Provide every youth an opportunity to be involved in a quality Scouting experience.
Pillar 2: Fiscally Sound – Assure that our Council is fiscally sound and financially sustainable.
Pillar 3: Volunteer Leadership – Dramatically increase the number of engaged, accountable volunteers at all levels of Scouting.
Pillar 4: Chartered Organizations and Strategic Alliances – Identify and engage local chartered organizations and strategic alliances.
Pillar 5: Human Resources – Identify, develop, and retain enough of the right professionals in the right positions at all levels, with a focus on diversity.

Between January 25, 2008 and March 14, 2008, over 220 people viewed these pages. The several comments submitted were reviewed by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. All comments received responses, and some resulted in modifications to the plan. Thank you to all who reviewed this report and to those who submitted comments.
