The cost of providing Scouting is shared by five groups: Youth members and their parents, members of the unit, the chartered organizations, your Council, and the National Boy Scouts of America Organization. Youth members and their parents buy the uniform, handbook, personal equipment, and pay for camp fees. They also pay dues to help offset the expense of operating the unit. The unit pays for activities, supplies and equipment needed. These funds come from member dues and various money-earning projects that have been approved by the Council.
Scouting is unique, because it enters into a relationship with chartered organizations. These chartered organizations are locally established groups from our community, that share Scouting's values and interest in youth. They provide the meeting place and volunteer leadership for our Scouts. The Des Plaines Valley Council pays its share through local financial resources provided by:
- the United Way,
- foundations,
- trust funds,
- special events,
- special projects, and
- Friends of Scouting Campaigns.
The registration fee, Boys' Life subscription, and a small share of the price of the uniform and equipment help support the National BSA Organization that makes Scouting available.

What may units do to raise funds to support their programs? How do units setup accounts at the Service Center? What financial responsibilities and options exist for packs, troops, and crews/ships?
Units keep 30% or more of their sales. So, selling popcorn is a profitable and fun fund-raising activity for units and the Council. Find out what's happening this year!
Annual Friends of Scouting (FOS) Campaign
Communities, corporations, Scouting families and friends are asked to support our Council's Scouting program. This is a major source of revenue for the Council.
Local council endowment ensures that Scouting will continue building character, fitness, and citizenship for years to come. Find out about ways to plan a gift to your local council and the additional personal income and tax benefits your gift can create.
