Cub Scout Training

A trained leader is one who has completed both Fast Start and Basic Training for the registered position held and is knowledgeable in the role to be performed. Every boy in the Cub Scouting program needs and deserves a leader who understands the aims of the program and knows how to deliver it with enthusiasm and fun – in short, a trained leader. Because they understand their role, trained leaders have a positive influence on the lives of boys. Research shows that boys with trained leaders enjoy Cub Scouting more and stay in the program longer. How well we influence the lives of boys depends on leaders’ understanding of the program and their responsibilities.

As they help boys grow, trained leaders enjoy the satisfaction that comes from knowing that their efforts are truly worthwhile. They gain confidence in their abilities through an understanding of their responsibilities and how to meet them.

Cub Scout leader training takes what we know about boys and how they grow – physically, mentally, emotionally, and morally – and combines it with proven methods of influencing that growth in positive ways to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Training helps leaders gain knowledge, develop positive attitudes, and learn skills they need in order to be successful leaders. It shows them how to use resources to provide an exciting and worthwhile program for the boys. It gives them confidence to carry out their responsibilities. As a result, Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts receive a program designed to achieve Scouting’s aims of character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.

Our primary objective is to deliver quality training to every leader at a time the leader needs it. For most leaders, this means Fast Start training for their position as soon as they accept the responsibility, followed by basic training within thirty days or less. If the leader’s need and availability match up with a scheduled training course, that’s great! Group training usually is the best kind of training for leaders. But training can’t wait. If the course is more than a month away or the new leader can’t attend, then training must come to the leader.
